Drinking control and alcohol reduction program in Windsor Ontario

Many people are surprised to learn that changing your relationship with alcohol does not always have to be viewed as an all-or-nothing decision.

For an appropriate participant, the goal may be to reach the point where you decide whether you drink — alcohol does not make the decision for you.

That can mean being able to comfortably say no, having much less desire to drink, and being able to make clear and controlled choices in social situations, at home, during stressful periods and throughout everyday life.

Drinking Is Often About More Than the Drink

Alcohol use can become connected with many different parts of a person’s life.
Stress.
• Social situations.
• Relationships.
• Habits and routines.
• Emotions.
• Reward.
• Relaxation.
• Confidence.
• Certain people, places or environments.
• Past experiences.
• Even particular times of the day can become associated with drinking.

That is why our approach looks at the whole person — Body & Mind.

We want to understand the drinking pattern, what strengthens it, what the person experiences before they drink, what they are looking for from alcohol and what needs to change to allow greater control to become natural.

Two Important Pieces: Cravings and Control

Rick Saruna has found through decades of clinical work that two important pieces of changing a drinking pattern are:

1. Reducing the Desire and Cravings

When the desire for alcohol becomes lower, making a different choice becomes easier.

Our program works to change many of the learned associations and patterns that can create the urge to drink.

2. Strengthening Willpower and Conscious Choice

We also work on strengthening the person’s ability to make a clear decision and follow through with it.

The objective is greater control, awareness and choice.

When cravings become lower and personal control becomes stronger, a person can begin developing a very different relationship with alcohol.

A Complete Body & Mind Drinking Control Program

Our Drinking Control Program brings together multiple approaches and more than 30 years of clinical experience into one individualized program.

Because therapeutic laser is incorporated into the complete Drinking Control Program, the full program is provided in person at our Windsor clinic.

Depending upon the needs of the individual, the program can incorporate:

Specialized Education

Understanding drinking patterns, conditioning, triggers, choices and the factors that influence alcohol use.

Therapeutic Laser

Laser treatments are incorporated into the program as part of our approach to cravings, relaxation and behavioural change.

Clinical Hypnosis & Subconscious Reprogramming

Rick Saruna is a Clinical Hypnosis Instructor with decades of experience using hypnosis and subconscious change techniques.

Hypnosis can be used to reinforce new patterns, strengthen control, change associations with alcohol and help the mind become increasingly comfortable with healthier choices.

SRERE — Saruna Rapid Emotional Release & Empowerment

Rick specializes in SRERE, his rapid emotional release and empowerment approach.

When stress, emotional experiences, unresolved reactions or other emotional patterns are contributing to drinking, SRERE gives us another important way of addressing those factors.

Rather than working only with the drinking behaviour, we can work with what may be driving the behaviour emotionally.

Stress & Emotional Work

For some people, drinking has become associated with unwinding, escaping pressure, changing how they feel or shutting off an overactive mind.

We work directly with those patterns and help develop a different internal response.

Nutrition, Eating Habits & Wellness

Food, nutrition, daily routines, sleep, stress and general wellness may also be considered as part of the Body & Mind approach.

When appropriate, natural health or nutritional supplements may be recommended separately based upon individual needs.

Environmental & Situational Patterns

We look at the situations surrounding drinking:

* When does it happen?
* Where does it happen?
* Who is usually present?
* What happens immediately before drinking?
* Which situations create the greatest desire?
* Where does the person already have good control?

Understanding the complete pattern allows treatment to be individualized.

Drinking Is Often About More Than the Drink

For some people, yes.
Some clients come to us because they want to stop drinking. Others want to reduce their alcohol use and regain control.

The appropriate goal depends upon the individual, their history, their drinking pattern, their health and what they genuinely want to accomplish.

For a person pursuing drinking control, success may mean being able to:
• Decide confidently whether they want a drink
• Comfortably say no
• Reduce the frequency of drinking
• Reduce the amount consumed
• Experience fewer cravings
• Stop automatically associating alcohol with relaxation or stress relief
• Feel comfortable in social situations without needing alcohol
• Have an occasional drink while maintaining control
• Recognize when enough is enough
• Feel increasingly confident in their own choices

The important word is choice.

The objective is for the individual to become increasingly confident that they are making the decision.

The 5-Week Drinking Control Program

10 Private Sessions Over 5 Weeks

Clients are generally seen twice per week for five weeks.

Each session is usually 60 to 90 minutes, depending upon the work being completed during that appointment. Because the program is individualized, different sessions may emphasize different components of the process.

One appointment may involve more education and awareness. Another may involve laser and hypnosis. Another may involve SRERE and emotional work. Another may focus heavily on cravings, environmental triggers or strengthening control.

We use the approaches that are appropriate for the person and for where they are in the program.

Program Investment

Complete 5-Week Drinking Control Program

10 individual 60–90 minute sessions

$3,500 + HST

Following completion of the initial program, we generally recommend two reinforcement sessions approximately one month apart.

Reinforcement / Booster Sessions: $300 each

These appointments are booked separately.

If a Drinking Control client feels that an additional booster would be beneficial at any time in the future, additional booster sessions can also be booked separately.

Our Drinking Control clients receive a preferred booking window, allowing us to arrange an appointment as quickly as reasonably possible when reinforcement would be helpful.

Any nutritional or natural-health products recommended are separate from the program fee.

The Person Has to Want the Change

A family member can encourage someone. A spouse can support someone. A brother or sister can help someone find treatment. And a family member can certainly pay for the program. But the person participating needs to be personally ready to make the change.

Before accepting someone into our Drinking Control Program, Rick speaks directly with the prospective client. We want to understand:

• What they want to change
• Their current drinking pattern
• What they believe is contributing to it
• What greater control would mean to them
• Their personal goals
• Their willingness to participate
• Their commitment to the program

That initial conversation helps us determine whether our approach is appropriate for them.

Why a Body & Mind Approach?

A person’s relationship with alcohol can involve the mind, emotions, habits, environment, lifestyle and physical wellbeing. So we look at all of them.

Body & Mind means exactly that.

We look at the complete person and determine which pieces need attention to help create greater control and lasting change.

Can I learn to control drinking instead of completely quitting?

Yes. For appropriate individuals, the goal can be reducing alcohol use, lowering cravings and developing greater control rather than necessarily eliminating alcohol completely.

How many sessions are included?

The initial Drinking Control Program includes 10 private sessions over approximately five weeks, generally scheduled twice per week.

How long is each session?

Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes.

What does the program include?

The program can include specialized education, therapeutic laser, clinical hypnosis and subconscious reprogramming, SRERE rapid emotional release and empowerment work, craving reduction, strengthening willpower and self-control, stress and emotional work, environmental and situational assessment, nutrition and lifestyle considerations, and individualized Body & Mind support.

How much does the program cost?

The complete five-week Drinking Control Program is $3,500 plus HST.

Recommended reinforcement and booster sessions following the initial program are $300 each and are booked separately.
